Many patients often ask if getting braces is painful. The truth is, applying braces itself doesn’t hurt, so there’s no need to worry. You might notice mild soreness or slight discomfort once the orthodontic wire is placed into the brackets, usually lasting a few days.
There are two main types of fixed braces used for straightening teeth: ceramic and metal. Both types involve brackets bonded to each tooth, with an archwire threaded through to gently guide teeth into place. Elastic or wire ties secure the wire, although some orthodontists prefer self-ligating brackets that don’t need elastic ties.
Fixed braces correct many bite issues like overbite, underbite, crossbite, and overcrowding. If overcrowding is severe, your orthodontist might recommend removing certain teeth to create enough room for proper alignment.

Here’s a simple timeline to help you understand what happens when you get braces:
- Placement day – You won’t feel pain during placement. Eating might feel different at first because your mouth is adjusting. Some people find their teeth more sensitive initially. To ease this period, stick to softer foods and avoid anything hard or tough to chew for a few days.
- Two days after placement – Mild discomfort can occur as your teeth start moving. The archwire and elastic bands apply pressure that your mouth isn’t used to yet. Your orthodontist will give you relief wax to cover brackets and soothe inner cheeks or lips. Over-the-counter medicines like Motrin® or Advil® can also help ease soreness.
- Five days after placement – By now, most soreness should be gone. Your teeth have started adapting, making eating easier. You might still want to avoid very hard foods, but most normal meals are manageable.
- Orthodontic appointments – You’ll visit regularly for adjustments where the orthodontist changes wires or ties to keep teeth moving gently. After each adjustment, expect a little tenderness for a few days, but it usually fades quickly.
- Dealing with discomfort – Along with wax and pain relievers, chewing sugar-free gum can increase blood flow and reduce discomfort while helping teeth move faster.
