What is a Malocclusion?
A malocclusion means the upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible) don’t align properly, or your teeth are crooked. Most people have some form of malocclusion, caused by a mix of genetics and habits formed early in life.

- Class I: The bite is normal, but there may be crowding or gaps between teeth.
- Class II: Known as an overbite, where the upper teeth sit noticeably ahead of the lower teeth. This might be due to front teeth sticking out or overlapping.
- Class III: Also called an underbite or prognathism, where the lower teeth are positioned further forward than the upper teeth, often from a larger lower jaw or shorter upper jaw.
Why treat a malocclusion?
Severe malocclusions can cause uneven facial structure. Sometimes, orthodontists team up with maxillofacial surgeons to correct jaw issues. It’s never too late to improve your smile — both kids and adults benefit from orthodontic treatment.
Common reasons to fix a malocclusion include:
- Lower risk of tooth decay: Uneven teeth wear can cause erosion and cavities over time.
- Easier oral care: Crowded teeth are harder to clean, increasing plaque buildup and gum problems.
- Reduced TMJ issues: Misaligned bites can strain the jaw joint, causing headaches, facial pain, and teeth grinding. Straightening teeth can ease these symptoms.
How do orthodontists treat malocclusion?
Orthodontists start by taking panoramic X-rays, doing a thorough exam, and making bite impressions. Treatment depends on the type and cause of malocclusion.
Options include:
- Fixed braces: Brackets glued to teeth with archwires adjusted regularly to move teeth into place.
- Removable devices: Retainers, headgear, and palate expanders help guide jaw growth and keep teeth aligned.
- Invisalign®: Clear, removable aligners that straighten teeth discreetly without affecting your smile’s look.
