Different types of orthodontic braces

There are various kinds of orthodontic braces designed to realign teeth, improving chewing, biting, and appearance. These orthodontic appliances offer flexibility, control, and convenience to wearers.

Braces come mainly in two categories: removable and fixed. Removable braces can be taken out anytime by the wearer, while fixed braces are attached and removed only by your orthodontist. Fixed braces often address more complex alignment issues, whereas removable braces give you more freedom during your treatment.

Traditional Fixed Braces

Traditional braces are generally more affordable and effective, especially for severe bite problems (malocclusion). These braces involve bonding individual brackets to each tooth and connecting them with a thin wire. Continuous, gentle pressure moves the teeth gradually. Orthodontists adjust the braces regularly to maintain the right pressure.

Brackets come in metal, ceramic, and clear types. Metal brackets are sturdy but very visible. Ceramic brackets blend better with teeth but can stain if not cleaned well. Clear brackets are the least noticeable but tend to be pricier and more fragile.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are attached behind the teeth, making them nearly invisible. They use custom-made brackets connected with wires. Many patients appreciate their discreet look, though some notice temporary speech changes at first.

Damon System

The Damon System offers a less visible option compared to traditional braces. It uses light wires to start aligning teeth, gradually replaced by stronger wires. Unlike traditional braces that use elastic bands, Damon uses sliding doors to hold wires, which reduces friction and discomfort. This system often speeds up treatment and is gentler on gums but may cost more.

SureSmile

SureSmile uses advanced technology to shorten treatment time. It involves 3D imaging with an OraScanner or Cone Beam CT scan to capture precise tooth positions. Then, a computer designs a custom archwire that warms to body heat to activate tooth movement. This precise system is effective but usually more expensive.

Six Month Smiles

Six Month Smiles focuses on improving the appearance of front teeth rather than full alignment. It uses small wires and tooth-colored brackets to keep braces subtle. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t push teeth harder but rather targets visible teeth for cosmetic enhancement. It’s a popular, affordable option for a quick smile refresh.

Removable Devices

Invisalign® Clear Braces

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners that gently shift teeth into place. Each aligner is worn about two weeks before switching to the next. Removable for eating and social occasions, Invisalign requires consistent wear to achieve timely results. These clear braces are best for mild to moderate alignment issues. Other similar brands include ClearCorrect and MTM® Clear Aligner.
